FLINT, Mich. — Michigan correctional officers can now fulfill their mandatory employee college credit requirements at no cost, thanks to a new grant program funded by the state.
The program provides tuition and fees for corrections officers at any Michigan community college. According to Mott Community College, the fund supports the Michigan Department of Corrections’ requirement that officers earn 15 college credits within 24 months of employment.
Mott Community College Second Chance Pell Coordinator Mary Cusack said the state is funding $5 million to help pay the tuition for all MDOC correction officers’ 15 required credits, WJRT reports .
“The more education that both correction officers and the people they have custody over are getting the safer the environment in the facilities,” Cusack told WJRT. “And we want not just corrections but rehabilitation and you need everyone to be on the same page and education is the great equalizer.”
